Books that you might enjoy
For those wanting to learn more about how to start a conversation about your faith
As most of you are aware, I love to write. Initially, I wrote and self published two daily devotionals, but this latter writing took me on a journey that I had no intention of traveling. It's a book that I pray will enhance conversations about Jesus. In a world that seemingly has lost its moral compass questioning the truth and relevance of God and His Son, Jesus and the Christian way of life, I was nudged to begin to write. And this wasn't a one time nudge...the Lord just would not let me rest from this assignment until pen was in hand.
A sweet group of ladies asked me to lead them in a study on the subject matter included in "Why Jesus? Why Now?" and it has been such a blessing for all of us. We delved into the scriptures to find out more about the historical and archaeological finds as described by the writers of the gospel. We additionally researched other texts to see if this information is true. As you might already assume, nothing as been disproved. It's such a joy to listen and learn from others that are newly discovering how to defend their faith.
I pray this writing will be used by God to bring others to the well of knowledge and spiritual truths that never runs dry!!
Description of Book, "Why Jesus? Why Now?"
Are you disillusioned with the state of Christianity in an increasingly isolating, brutal, and morally ambiguous world? Does the church seem like a failed experiment? Do you wonder whether God is even listening? If so, you’re in good company, and Cookie White’s new Bible study guide will pull you into a compelling conversation about maintaining a relevant faith in the twenty-first century.
The eleven chapters in this guide are based on real questions from real people, including the following:
Do heaven and hell really exist?
Is there really only one way to heaven?
Why does God seem to answer some prayers but not others?
Is a sense of morality woven into my DNA, or is it based on my circumstances?
What does scripture say about alternative lifestyles?
If all I want to do is love God, do I need to talk about the sin issue?
Why do I need Jesus? Why now?
Using primary source documents and sound commentary, Cookie answers all these and more.
In a seemingly arbitrary and harsh reality, Why Jesus? Why Now? offers something uniquely optimistic: hope in a God who is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, and whose love—unlike the times—is unchanging.
All praise belongs to God and our Lord Jesus Christ! Here is the cover and write up for the latest book God laid on my heart a year ago. I am so excited to have this subject discussed among groups and between individuals so that Jesus will be front and center in our hearts and minds.

For some time now, the description of my two previously self-published books has been posted to this website as an insight to the material contained within their pages and for ordering purposes. However, I would like to take a few moments to explain the events surrounding their origination and what has transpired since 2012 when the last book was published.
The first book, And I Heard God Whisper, "Walk with Me" was written in 2010 after a personal experience with breast cancer in 2003. Four of the thirty-three devotionals address my journey with this disease which is all too often heard about today. This book allows room at the conclusion of each devotional for writing your own personal thoughts and for writing prayer concerns. The second book, written 2012, Being Led Beside Still Waters, contains stories and collections of everyday life that incorporates spiritual lessons from the leading of the Holy Spirit. We omitted the areas for personal comments so that we might include additional devotional material. This book contains forty-one days of devotionals.
We decided that a portion of the proceeds of the second book would be collected to support a fund for Cpl. Doug Vitale of the USMC who was severely wounded in Afghanistan. Doug and his wife, Lexie were the recipients of a "smart house" built by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (www.tunneltotowers.org) and the Gary Sinise Foundation (www.garysinisefoundation.org). Lexie grew up with Cookie's children. This remains a very important ministry outreach for The Sounding Board Teaching Ministries.
So what has transpired since the release of the second book in 2012? In the fall of that year, before the book went to publication, my dad helped in choosing the cover. I wanted a single chair by the water and the publisher sent me a picture of two chairs. Dad looked at me and said, "Cook, just imagine that it's you and Jesus sitting by the water," and that was it. The cover was chosen. In April of 2013, daddy went to be with the Lord. The first devotional in that book, which dad did hear, was written for him. It's entitled, "What Happens When You Lose Your Whistle?"
When Dad died suddenly on April 19th of 2013, I had just undergone surgery for a femoral hernia two days before. Hoping to be able to recuperate and travel to Virginia for my mom's birthday on April 26th, I was now on the road in a weaken state. Adding to those circumstances was a terrible ATV accident our son was involved in after arriving in Virginia 24 hours before his grandfather's funeral. Within three days, three major occurrences surrounded my "normal" life and my mother was needing to immediately be placed in assisted living due to her macular degeneration. My head was spinning and my health was needing to adjust to all the newly appointed responsibilities being placed on my overloaded plate. Our son was with us in Virginia for a week following dad's death with a broken nose and tailbone and so much of his skin scraped off his body that I have a hard time recalling what I saw.
As my mind and body began taking in our "new normal" the fall of 2013 brought additional news. Our daughter, Kimberly, shared with me she was unhappy in her marriage. Throughout the following year we watched as her health suffered and we soon realized our life as a family was being introduced to another path. Saddened for our daughter and granddaughter, we have encouraged and supported them as our hearts have been broken. At times we scramble to understand and often we never fully do, but we march forward with lessons learned and hearts full of additional compassion for all concerned.
After adjusting so well to assisted living, last year my mom suffered two strokes which rendered her completely blind and in need of being transferred to a nursing home. Her mobility and memory have been affected and it has been a very sad time listening and watching mom trying to adjust. Her questions remains, "Why doesn't God take me home? I'm ready!" To which we reply, "Mom, God just isn't ready for you yet."
Maybe this will shed a little light on why my blogs and devotionals have been sporadic at best for the past few years. As I look back over the time, I can't believe it's going on three years since dad passed. During this time I have felt that perhaps God had additional lessons for me to learn, more insight into others' adventures, and what it means to lose a parent, watch a child go through pain and suffering whether physical, mental or emotional. And, most of all, what it has meant to hang on to Jesus when the footing beneath you is shaking like crazy.
But this I do know, God has been and continues to be the Almighty Strong Tower to which I run. There have been many times I didn't feel like I had anything to share with my readers that would encourage or build up their faith. How can you when the world as you know it seems to be coming apart? Learning that a believer can go from hanging on to the hem of the garment of Christ Jesus and knowing that even if you fall or fall apart, the Lord is there to pick you up and carry you, is ongoing.
"But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly, that what he has done has been done through God." John 3:21
